Kizimkazi, Zanzibar

This trip was both sad and fascinating to learn how the locals were kept as prisoners awaiting a fate of slavery in tiny rooms with little to none ventilation. At the museum there is a comprehensive explanation of the slave trade the beginning and end of which heavily involved Britain. There are many stories of hard will and determination to survive against all odds. The stories of the survivors are shocking, humbling and deeply saddening.  This is one of the places to visit that should be not missed when in Zanzibar. We did this as an organised tour and it was helpful having a local guide on hand to answer questions.
